How does a pulser coil work?
The purpose of the Pulser coil is to give ignition signals to the engine and ignition system. The resistance categorizes pulser coils. They are pulse generators that work when the engine is ignited. Higher resistance ohms readings mean the coil is damaged.
What are the symptoms of a bad pulser coil?
Signs of a Bad Pickup Coil
- No Engine Spark. The pickup coil sends the signal from the ignition module to the spark plugs during the ignition process.
- Rough Idle. Because the spark plugs are not communicating proper timing to the fuel injectors, a rough idle may occur.
- Engine Stall/Failure to Accelerate.
What does a coil Pulser do on a outboard motor?
What Does a Coil Do on a Boat Motor? The marine coil works just like the component in your vehicle. This vital part is responsible for transforming the voltage from the battery into the volts needed to create a spark at the plugs. This spark then ignites the fuel, which keeps your motor running.
What does a coil pickup do?
They are located inside the distributor and function as the trigger for the ignition system to produce spark. The pickup coil monitors the rotation of the distributor and triggers the ignition system at the optimal moment to produce the best timed spark for best engine performance.
How do you check the resistance on a pickup coil?
Connect the red (positive) lead of the multimeter to the outer, positive terminal of the ignition coil. Turn the reading dial on the multimeter to ohms to measure resistance of the primary pickup coil. (The Greek letter omega denotes ohms.)
What happens if coil pack goes bad?
Coil Pack Problems Usually, if a coil pack is bad, there will be a loss of fire or spark in one or more cylinders. This causes what’s commonly referred to as misfiring. Misfiring can cause drag on the crankshaft, and usually results in a very poor performing engine.
What are the symptoms of a bad stator on an outboard?
You can know you have a bad stator by looking at it. If the stator is covered in salt and corrosion. Or you see it has melted or burnt windings on it. Then you could almost bet that it is bad.
Can you bypass a pickup coil?
You can temporarily bypass a CDI box for troubleshooting purposes. The box amplifies the small signal generated from the spinning magnet located in front of the pickup coil in the stator, just before top dead center (TDC), when your fuel-air mixture is ignited. The box can’t generate continuous sparks.
What does the pulser coil do on a motorcycle?
The Pulser Coil, (often called Pickup Coil, or Timing Coil) is responsible for providing the timing signal to the ignition control box on modern motorcycles with solid-state ignition systems. The majority of motorcycles from the late 1970′s and up use this system for reliable, accurate, and low maintenance ignition control.
What is the resistance of a Pulser coil?
No announcement yet. I think I have a bad pulser coil but would like some input from the forum. The SM says the resistance is between 459-561 ohms. I measusre 564 on coil1 (W/R to Blk) and 567 on coil2 (W/B to Blk).
Is the pulser ignition coil a bad coil?
RodBolt17 says that the pulser coil is probably not bad. I went and took some new measurements of the pulser and called CDI Industries. The person I talked with verified that I probably don’t have a bad pulser. Using the DVA I tested the ignition coils according to SM. The SM calls for 290v @1500rpm.
Are there 3 wires on the pulser coil?
On the pulser coil there’s 3 wires, the center wire is reference. I took 2 pins and slid them along side the wire into the connector. The motor ran perfectly. Went back the next day and tried the same test and it ran rough. Thinking the issue was in the connector I made a harness, separated the connector and monitored the v with the DVA.
