Will a car start with a bad idle air control valve?
If your vehicle has the 4-liter V-6, the problem may be a faulty idle air control valve. Whenever you start the engine, the throttle is closed so the valve meters the proper amount of air for combustion. If it allows too much or too little, the result is hard starting and often rough idle.

- Grime buildup. Dirt and grime can build up inside the part’s housing (some mechanics call this “coking”) causing an interruption in air-fuel flow.
- Electrical problems.

- Poor or high idle.
- The ominous check engine light.
Why does my car rev up and down while idling?
If an engine is not getting enough fuel (this is called “running lean”), due to fuel pressure (regulated by the fuel pump and regulator), restricted fuel injectors, a vacuum leak or really anything that throws off the fuel mixture going in to the engine, this can cause the surge.
Is it normal for RPM to fluctuate at idle?
The idle speed should feel consistent without skipping or slipping. In most of today’s cars, an idle speed of 600 to 1000 RPMs is average. If your car is idling rough, though, it won’t feel smooth. The RPMs will jump up and down, for example, or they’ll fall below 600 RPM (or whatever is typical for your vehicle).
What should IAC be at idle?
The typical consumer car will idle somewhere in the range of 500-1000 RPM, depending on the vehicle. Consult your owner’s manual to find your specific car’s normal speed. High-strung performance cars may have higher idles, and motorcycles have idles that range between 2,500-4,000 RPM.
Can you adjust the idle air control valve?
Remove the valve cap. Restart the engine and adjust the throttle body idle with the screwdriver. Adjust until the engine idles at 675 RPM.
